Our first group project assigned us the task of assessing whether the area surrounding 124th Street and Stony Plain Road was conducive for the implementation of Transit Oriented Development. The proposed LRT in the area would be the driver of this development. Our assessment suggested that the north east quadrant was not an ideal place for TOD in its current state. Here were the results of our analysis:
I though this project was creative and relevant and enjoyed being able to walk around the neighbourhood and closely asses the conditions. This was a really good exercises to give students a feel of what real city assessments such as these would involve. My group members were great to work with and we especially enjoyed getting to know each other over lunch. I'm also happy that the group allowed me to take over and create the PowerPoint because I like making PowerPoints and if we are going to be showing it to people, it better look good.
Out of the three groups, ours was the only one to suggest that our area was not suitable for TOD development. I think that we made a good argument which was supported by our analysis of the area in its current form. I think the biggest improvement we could have made to our analysis and our presentation would have been to include suggestions on how to overcome this. As a group we did discuss the changes that could have been made to revitalize the area to make it more conducive to TOD, but our discussion of this within the class presentation itself was limited.
